The Thornton National Register Historic District is in Thornbury Township. It includes the “Yellow House” built by John King in the early 1800s. The building became a post office in 1832 and is one of the oldest post offices in its original space. Other historic houses in the district are wood frame or stone. In all, there are 195 historic structures in Thornbury Township. A railroad station was built in Glen Mills in 1882 and increased the economic growth of Thornbury Township as products from the mills and nail factories were taken to Philadelphia and much needed items were brought to the township. In the twentieth century, the mills began to close. Farming continued until the 1970s and a quarry opened in the township. Railroad service ended in Thornbury Township but the township’s location brought people who wanted to live in an area of less congestion with plenty of open space.
